What can I say about the weekend...

There were 38 of us who left Glasgow by a variety of means, minibus, car and train and made our way to Carronvale House, our third year there. Once we were all safely shown our rooms we gathered in the lounge for a couple of quizzes and an interesting game singing Nursery Rhymes - some of the singing was truly awful! None of that made the video you will be glad to know.

Soon the annual jigsaw was started and supper was served and we began to drift off to bed. Saturday, we were up and over-fed on a great breakfast and after, the annual putting competition won by David Hain after a playoff with Pam.

We were all loaded into the minibus and we set off to Dunfermline, when we arrived we had our lunch in the park and then the fun began. The two Marion’s took to the Chutes, Isabel to the Springy Elephant, Dorothy and Faye on the swings...the Bob made it to the roundabout! If you don’t believe us, check the video! There was no room for the kids. We set off into town in a variety of groups with Bob leading the way. We had an interesting visit to ‘Oasis’ a churches project in the shopping centre.

Then we were heading back to Carronvale for more food and the first of the workshops. Alan had set the idea that we would meet a secret millionaire during the weekend and we were treated to an episode of the programme, after which we were left to be the ones making the decisions about how we would give away our money. Our evening movie was ‘Bruce Almighty’ which would be the subject of the Sunday morning service.

Sunday morning’s service was on the subject of grace and how we can be part of the miracle. In the afternoon we had some free time. Some went swimming and others walked to the Falkirk Wheel, while others just had a lazy afternoon. Our other workshops were based on Rob Bell’s Nooma called "Corner": a chance to reflect on being grateful and how we can all give something of ourselves to support others. In the evening we had our communion service and people had the chance to reflect on the weekend and how it has affected us. People chatted away into the early hours.

Monday was a time to tie up some loose ends and reflect on the weekend and what people wanted to do for next year. We will be going back to the same venue at the same time. Maureen, Faye, Stuart and Mark will all be part of the group that organises next year’s weekend.

This year’s weekend was quite different from years gone by. We had some 11 people there for the first time and it was a great opportunity to get to know them better and it certainly gave a different perspective on being Church.

Here’s to next year as we seek to grow in faith, grow in community, and grow together as we face the future trying to be God’s people today.
